Predicting the Time at which a Lévy Process Attains its Ultimate Supremum

چکیده
We consider the problem of finding a stopping time that minimises the L1distance to θ, the time at which a Lévy process attains its ultimate supremum. This problem was studied in [12] for a Brownian motion with drift and a finite time horizon. We consider a general Lévy process and an infinite time horizon (only compound Poisson processes are excluded, furthermore due to the infinite horizon the problem is only interesting when the Lévy process drifts to −∞). Existing results allow us to rewrite the problem as a classic optimal stopping problem, i.e. with an adapted payoff process. We show the following. If θ has infinite mean there exists no stopping time with a finite L1-distance to θ, whereas if θ has finite mean it is either optimal to stop immediately or to stop when the process reflected in its supremum exceeds a positive level, depending on whether the median of the law of the ultimate supremum equals zero or is positive. Furthermore, pasting properties are derived. Finally, the result is made more explicit in terms of scale functions in the case when the Lévy process has no positive jumps.

The σ-finite measure Psup which unifies supremum penalisations for a stable Lévy process is introduced. Silverstein’s coinvariant and coharmonic functions for Lévy processes and Chaumont’s h-transform processes with respect to these functions are utilized for the construction of Psup.
متن کاملInvariance Principles for Local Times at the Supremum of Random Walks and Lévy Processes
We prove that when a sequence of Lévy processes X(n) or a normed sequence of random walks S(n) converges a.s. on the Skorokhod space toward a Lévy process X, the sequence L(n) of local times at the supremum of X(n) converges uniformly on compact sets in probability toward the local time at the supremum of X. A consequence of this result is that the sequence of (quadrivariate) ladder processes (...
متن کاملApplications of factorization embeddings for Lévy processes
We give three applications of the Pecherskii-Rogozin-Spitzer identity for Lévy processes: • Phase-type upward jumps: we find the joint distribution of the supremum and the epoch at which it is ‘attained’ if a Lévy process has phase-type upward jumps. We also find the characteristics of the ladder process. • Perturbed risk models: we establish general properties, and obtain explicit fluctuation ...
متن کاملOptimal prediction for positive self-similar Markov processes
This paper addresses the question of predicting when a positive self-similar Markov process X attains its pathwise global supremum or infimum before hitting zero for the first time (if it does at all). This problem has been studied in [9] under the assumption that X is a positive transient diffusion. We extend their result to the class of positive self-similar Markov processes by establishing a...
متن کاملLocal Time of a Diffusion in a Stable Lévy Environment
We consider a one-dimensional diffusion in a stable Lévy environment. We show that the normalized local time process refocused at the bottom of the standard valley with height log t, (LX(t,mlog t + x)/t, x ∈ R), converges in law to a functional of two independent Lévy processes conditioned to stay positive. To prove this result, we show that the law of the standard valley is close to a two-side...
